Dodge Challenger SRT8 Hemi

For those of you who have never seen a Dodge Challenger SRT8 think of a Ford Mustang, but with the new 2009 6.1 L SRT HEMI V-8 engine, with even more power, which can propel the Dodge Challenger SRT8 to over 174 miles per hour.

HEMI engines are traditionally known as being powerful, performance engines used mostly in muscle cars and drag racing. However, this new 6.1 L HEMI V-8 engine designed by engineers at SRT is the most powerful HEMI ever created. They did this by making the old 5.7 L design more efficient, which they achieved by making the engine larger, increasing the compression ratio, and redesigning the cylinder head, the intake, and the exhaust systems.

You see all of this made the engine more efficient because when designing an engine there are a few things to think about when trying to maximize power output. First, you want to waste as little of the engine's energy as possible on the intake and exhaust process and in the redesign process the SRT engineers did just this. And second, you want to entrap as much heat as possible within the cylinder by reducing the surface area of the cylinder.

What makes the new Dodge Challenger SRT8 6.1 L HEMI V-8 engine so useful is because HEMI engines are rounded cylinders with two valves, which reduces the surface area significantly from say a flathead engine, and therefore makes the fuel burn hotter creating more pressure and therefore more power output.

So, how does the Dodge Challenger SRT8 drive? Well, first off, it drives as you would expect a V-8 HEMI powered car to drive, powerfully. As you push down on the gas for the first time, you can hear that roar, and it certainly is one of the fastest cars that I have ever driven. No more need to push on the gas and wait 5 seconds for the car to start accelerating.

It also handles extremely well given its size and weight.

Of course, the car was designed for power not fuel-efficiency. And the 22 mpg highway and 14 mpg city fuel economies are a testament to that. However, if you like big, powerful engines for racing or towing, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 6.1 L SRT HEMI V-8 engine would be an excellent choice, and I highly recommend to at least search for one on e-bay and make judgments for yourselves.
