1957 Chrysler Saratoga Hardtop Hemi

In 1951 the Chrysler Saratoga Club Coupe was introduced and it was cited as the sportiest and most collectible model of this line’s history. And so started the speed wars to see which car manufacturer could come up with the fastest car. It was much lighter in body style while also introducing a V-8 engine with hemispherical combustion chambers, or as we know it, the “Hemi”. A technology perfected by them to increase the horsepower of an engine. This kind of power under the hood made it a sweet ride for those people who had the mindset that “bigger is better” and was Chrysler’s “hot rod” that went for a then price tag of $3,348. Not a bad price huh? Well that was 48 years ago. But still a good price for that time because of how much car you were getting.

Hot rod racing had gotten popular as Oldsmobile introduced the “Rocket 88” as the standard for high-performance. Not wanting to be outdone, Chrysler came out with Saratoga Club Coupe as the answer to go up against Oldsmobile’s hot rod. And boy it was fast. A speed demon that could go from 0 to 60 mph in 12 seconds! It was faster than the Rocket 88 which timed in at 12.5 seconds, and Cadillac’s version the “Le Mans”, which clocked in at 13 seconds for that distance. So Chrysler won the title that year. Back then it was touted as the fastest car in North America. But 1951 would be the only year Chrysler would score a victory.

Since then auto manufacturers have changed their priorities to focus on fuel economy. They’ve taken the fun out of it. You can still find those speed demons today but it will cost you. 1951 was truly a banner year.

5.7 Hemi Engine

The thinking behind the original Hemi engine when Chrysler was designing it in the 1950’s was to give the engine horsepower through more efficient ways than the rest of the engines on the market. The uniqueness and difference in the building of this engine has required that other main features of the Hemi be designed differently. The combustion chamber on the Hemi is shaped like bowl changing the shape of the pistons, making them circular also. Instead of one spark plug per cylinder they have put two in each one. Instead of the valves going in straight they are set at an angle. The cylinder heads are larger to allow for the different directions that the intake and exhaust valve stems have to face. All the changes in the way parts sit in the engine and new technology gives the combustion chamber more room to allow the air to flow more evenly through and mix with the fuel for a better firing system.

The new 5.7 Hemi has even more horsepower per cubic inch than the previous versions. Chrysler uses a multi displacement system that will allow two cylinders on each side of the engine to be shut down when hauling a light load in order to save on fuel. The new Hemi 5.7 also has variable camshaft timing and it uses an oil-controlled valve that advances or slows down the camshaft timing.

Dodge Challenger R/T 426 Hot Rod Hemi

The design work on the exterior of the Challenger was done by Carl Cameron who also had a part in designing the 1966 Dodge Charger. The demand for pony cars started declining about the same time the challenger was put into production. As a result the 1970-1974 Challenger series sold less than 200,000 cars and production was halted mid-way through 1974. There were many excellent cars made around this time, but I think perhaps the 1970 Dodge Challenger RT 426 is one of the most under-rated cars of all time. I had the opportunity to test drive one of these Hemi powered beasts a few years ago, it is truly amazing how well the Challenger performs!

The Challenger has a longer wheelbase than many of the other hot rods made in the 1970's, this makes for some excellent handling. The Hemi engine in this baby sounds beautiful, and certainly has all the power you need. After I got used to the car, I wasn't scared in the least of taking curves at high speed, this car loves to hug the curves. You have no idea how fun one of these are to drive until you get behind the wheel yourself! I personally think the Challenger would have made very tough competition with other similar cars back in the day, it simply entered the market a little too late.

This is truly an awesome car, the Challenger series is one of the best things Dodge has ever done in my opinion. The Challenger puts out 425 Horsepower at 5000 rpms, and runs a quarter mile in 13 seconds flat. Not very many of these were sold due to the fact they were not very popular when new, but they are now highly sought after classics that are hard to find. If you ever have the chance to snag yourself one of these, do not hesitate! This is one of the best cars ever made.

Dodge Challenger Hemi

So, it's no wonder that with Chevy bringing back the Camaro and Ford revamping the Mustang that this monster of a car was going to make it's way back on the scene. On February 6th, 2008, Dodge released the most prominent pony car ever. Dodge took it back to the early elements of design. Car designers at Dodge did reluctantly change the chassis to a shortened wheel base.

All throughout the 70's and some of the 80's there were many different variations of the Dodge Challenger. Yet, the heavy set two door coupe fell off the list when sleeker sports cars came forth.

But now, the third generation Dodge Challenger with a Hemi engine is back with much attitude. The Hemi engine was designed to give a car more power. It got it's name from the hemispherical shaped combustion chamber meaning it's shaped like half a sphere. The valves for both fuel and exhaust open and close right in the top of the hemisphere. In a flat head engine, the valves are typically located within the block off to the side of the combustion chamber. With the igniting of fuel and exhaust taking place right in the chamber itself, the reaction sets off at a faster pace giving the car it's raw power.

With a car like the Dodge Challenger, the Hemi engine has upped it's game as well with both a 5.7L and a 6.1L availability.

You can get the Challenger with an automatic shifting engine, but why drive a car when it can be driven? Dodge has changed the tranny as well to give it a much more aggressive launch from gear to gear without making it a rough shift.

The only con I see is that the wheel base is shorter. It's what set the Challenger apart from it's twin body style the Barracuda by Plymouth. The Barracuda was slightly shorter. For street racers old and new, the longer body style could catch air when all the power torqued to the rear end, thrusting the front end upward.

When i first drove the Dodge Ram Mega cab, My first impression was simple. I really loved the space, one thing that always turned me off was cramped cab space. Nothing is worse to me then climbing in a sweaty cramped cab after a long days of work. I loved the huge cab this beast had on it and with a 4.10 axle ratio this truck can tow nearly 4 tons!

The Hemi is standard with the Mega Cab. The Hemi gets about 11 mpg (compared to about 20 for the Cummings turbo diesel).

Normally running, the Hemi is quiet; once its at 3,000 rpm you get a muscle car sound from the exhaust . Acceleration is great at any engine speed, and the transmission downshifts quickly, giving you 0-60 in under 10 seconds despite it being a full sized pickup.

Another thing I loved about the Mega Cab on this thing was the amazing view of the road. The large mirrors are great for trying to park this humongous thing. Also on some packages the mirrors come with defrosters.

This thing also stops in heartbeat, I've heard it stops nearly the same distance as a 4-D intrepid which says for itself how great the breaks on the Dodge Ram 1500 are. Another great pro this thing rides like a Cadillac compared to other high-end pickups. Adding a heavy load to the bed dampens the suspension and makes the ride even better.

Really, there are very few downsides to this great truck, but the one that stuck out like a sore thumb to me was the gas mileage. Don't get me wrong, its about average for a high-capacity large pickup but I would have expected Dodge to strive to achieve better gas mileage. I'm sure not raising the gas mileage on this great truck has got to be killing sales considering the new cash for clunkers deal which basically makes great truck absent from being such an amazing deal. Either way if you're looking for a full sized high-capacity pickup this is the truck for you and I advise you to try it out.

Harry Westlake, in 1948, created a powerful 6 cylinder engine for the makers of the Jaguar. For the day and age of the 1950's through the 60's, the world was wowed by the sheer power of 180 horsepower engines, that later grew to 425! An amount of power at the time that was unheard of. Every man on the block knew the neighbor who owned one.

Hemi Engine History

You'll find in a Hemi engine, a singular combustion chamber with half circle heads, called hemispheric heads, or "Hemi" heads. Until these were created, you were likely to have a flathead engine. These engines at the time were economical and easy to produce. They were of a simpler design and easy to maintain.

One of the problems with these engines, is that so much power was lost in small ways. You might have gas leftover and unburned, heat lost to the walls of the engine, that might otherwise be power toward your engine and speed. One of the greatest disadvantages of a flathead engine, was that there was a lot of surface area. That surface area is where you lose heat, and therefore power in your engine, and unburned fuel. With a Hemi engine, you are able to turn these disadvantages around. With less surface, and less heat loss, peak pressure can be higher. Simple and straightforward, the Hemi, although it was more complex in it's structure and creating, was the answer to greater power in a smaller space.

So the question you might ask then, is why are all cars not designed with these "Hemi" heads? The answer is simple. We are lucky that today we have designed engines with an even greater ability than these early Hemi's. Most of our modern cars have smaller combustion chambers which also reduce heat loss, and contain 4 valves that allow the car to burn fuel more efficiently. While today's Hemi engines have been slightly reshaped and designed, once again they are available with the promise of all the power, and efficient use of today's world of high cost gasoline.
